Trigger Point Injections

What are trigger points

Trigger points are tight, sensitive areas within your muscles that can cause both localized and referred pain. These small, hardened areas of muscle tissue can create discomfort that radiates far beyond the original site. These knots develop when muscle fibers become locked in a contracted state, often due to injury, overuse, or chronic stress on the muscle.

How do the injections work

Our approach to Trigger Point Injections utilizes precise doses of neurotoxin and/or lidocaine. This makes it distinctly different from traditional steroid injections. When administered into trigger points, the botulinum toxin works through several sophisticated mechanisms to provide pain relief:

Muscle Fiber Disruption

Precision injection of Botox directly into the trigger point addresses the contracted muscle fibers in multiple ways:

  • Physically breaks up the “knot” of hypercontracted muscle fibers
  • Disrupts the sustained muscle contraction pattern
  • Allows the muscle fibers to return to their normal length
  • Improves local blood circulation to the affected area

Neuromuscular Junction Blocking

The neurotoxin works at the cellular level by interrupting communication between nerves and muscles:

  • Blocks the release of acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction
  • Prevents nerve endings from sending chemical signals that tell muscles to contract
  • Creates a temporary chemical denervation at the injection site
  • This blocking effect is precise and targeted, affecting only the problematic areas

Muscle Relaxation

As the neurotoxin takes effect, it creates a cascade of beneficial changes:

  • The targeted muscle gradually releases its chronic contraction
  • Surrounding muscles can return to normal function
  • Reduces pressure on nearby nerves and blood vessels
  • Allows the entire muscle group to reset its tension patterns
  • The muscle can finally achieve true relaxation, often for the first time in months or years

Pain Signal Reduction

Beyond its effects on muscle function, neurotoxin has direct pain-relieving properties:

  • Blocks the release of pain-signaling neurotransmitters
  • Reduces inflammation in the surrounding tissue
  • Decreases sensitization of local pain receptors
  • Interrupts the pain-spasm-pain cycle that perpetuates chronic muscle pain
  • May have long-term effects on pain perception by resetting pain pathways

Benefits

  • Long-lasting results compared to traditional pain treatments
  • No downtime or recovery period needed
  • Precise targeting of specific pain areas
  • Reduced muscle tension and spasms
  • Prevention of pain pattern recurrence
  • Non-narcotic pain management solution
  • Integration with other treatment modalities

Initial relief appears within 24-72 hours post-treatment

Muscle relaxation progressively improves over 7-14 days

Peak benefits are typically achieved around 2 weeks after injection

Mild soreness at injection sites may last 1-3 days

You may notice a new sensation of muscle relaxation as the treatment takes effect
